Great to see your first record of the female Stonechat since the cold spell John.

The wintering Cockersands male and another seen by JB and myself at Conder Green on 26 January - but not since - are the only two in our area since the arrival of the ice-age.

There was a female around the Giant Hogweed forest in Middleton IE EAST, near the giant nissan hut-shaped building on the old ICI site, on 11th Jan - this was right at the end of the worst weather, so might still be around - will check.

I'm not sure there aren't at least two M Stonechat close to the coast in the Cockersands area. I saw one on the shore and one on the road within perhaps a mile of each other but only 20 minutes apart. Not conclusive I know, but the shore bird is very reliable on site. Previously recorded as a potential 'double' sighting on December 31st 2009.

Thanks for these Pete/Eddy.

Your 'possible' two at Cockersands sound feasible given the distance and short'ish time apart Eddy....interesting.

Thanks go to Pete Crooks for today's header photo of Aldcliffe. If you have a suitable picture of a local birding spot, why not send it to the webmaster, at andymccafferty@gmail.com? I need to resize (and if necessary crop) pictures to make them 600x130 pixels, so ideally send it at that size (definitely not smaller).
