Checklist of the Birds of Lancaster & District 1989-1999Copyright Lancaster & District Birdwatching Society, 2000 Checklist order and names:The Checklist order follows that of the British Ornithologists' Union The British List : bird species recorded in Great Britain. Latin names are also as used in the British List, although the more familiar English names have been used in the Checklist.Key to Status Comments:Vagrant = nine or fewer records in total for this area Very rare = 10-19 records e.g. Lapland Bunting = 11 Rare = 20-29 records Scarce = 30-50 in total Uncommon = 51-100 in total Regular = over 100 records in total Observers:Where full names have been deemed appropriate, these have not been included below:Mike Ainscough (MJA), Bill Ashby (WA), Dave Barber (DB), John Bateman (JWB), Chris Batty (CB), Joyce Birchall (JB), the late Phill Blackmore (PB), Dave Bowers (DB), Andrew Cadman (RAC), Paul Cammack (PCa), Doreen Carman (DC), Dave Carter (DCa), Jon Carter (JC), Pete Cartwright (PCw), Dave and Marjory Cording (D&MC), Shaun Coyle (SPC), Pete Crooks (PC), Lou Cross (LC), Bill Cross (WC), Bob Danson (RED), Ziggy Dawson (AD), Margaret Dempsey (MJD), Steve Dodgson (SJD), Graeme Dunlop (GD), Barry Dyson (BD), Liz Dyson (ED), Paul East (PE), Keith Gillon (KG), John Girdley (JAG), Fred Gould (AFG), Malcolm Greenhalgh (MEG), John Gregory (JGG), Robin and Meg Griffiths (R&MG), Ray Hobbs (RMH), Harry Howard (HH), Tim Hutchison (TH), John Holding (DJH), Brian Hugo (BVH), Ronnie Irving (RI), Maurice Jones (MJ), Ian Kinley (IK), John Leedal (JL), Ralph Lockwood (RL), Phil Mann (PM), Pete Marsh (PJM), Bob and the late Kath Marsh (R&KM), Nick Mason (NM), Andrew McCafferty (AMcC), John Metcalf (JM), Sarah Money (SM), Graham Powell (GP), Lesley and Gareth Powley (L&GPo), Mark Prestwood (MP), Bob Pyefinch (RP), Mary Rawcliffe (MR), Tony Riden (AR), Steve Riley (SJR), Jean Roberts (JR),Terry Robinson (STR), Andy Schofield (AS), Cyril Scott (CS), Derek Scott (DAS), Jim Searle (JS), Dave Sharpe (DJS), Gary Sharples (GS), Tony Sharples (ASh), Phil Slade (PS), Rex Stott (RS), Dave Thexton (DBT), David Thompson (DT), Les Tollitt (LT), Brian Townson (BT), Tom Wheeler (TWh), Tom Wilmer (TW), John Wilson (JW), Jonty Wilson (JnW), Pete Woodruff (PW), Ian Wrapson (IW). Birdline North West (BNW), Wetland Bird Survey Counters (WeBS). Species Recorded in the District, but not during the Checklist PeriodThe following species occurred in the LDBWS recording area outside the period under review:Mediterranean (Balearic) Shearwater (1986), Blue-winged Teal (1967), Stone Curlew (1975), White-rumped Sandpiper (1984), Baird's Sandpiper (1974, 1979), Marsh Sandpiper (1968), Wilson's Phalarope (1983, 1988), Laughing Gull (1984), Brunnich's Guillemot (1960), Pallas's Sandgrouse (1863), Aquatic Warbler (1979), Chough (1977), Ortolan Bunting (1979), Little Bunting (1957), Red-headed Bunting (1982). Baillon's Crake and Great Snipe have been published in at least one of the birdwatching journals of the time but have neither been accepted by BBRC, nor as Lancashire records. Published pre-1969 records of Cirl and Ortolan Bunting need similarly discounting. Bonapartes Gull has been accepted by BBRC but discounted in a Lancashire context and there are moves afoot to have this record reviewed by BBRC. Escapes: Mandarin, Golden Pheasant and Ring-necked ParakeetSeveral escapes have not been recorded in the main part of the Checklist; these include Mandarin, Golden Pheasant and Ring-necked Parakeet. There have been a few records of each of these, but none suggesting either self-sustaining populations, or involving birds which have not escaped from captivity. These species are on Category A of the British List on the strength of their status in south-east England. Our area is considered well outside the 'wandering range' for any of these.BibliographyThe following works may be cited in the text and are always referred to by an abbreviated title (shown in parentheses below).Checklists:BARNES, J.A.G. 1959.
